East Metro crowned state champs

A 138-run opening partnership from Madeleine Wright and Zoe Griffiths saw East Metro defeat the South East Sharks by 52 runs to claim the Under-18 VicSpirit State Championship at Jubilee Park yesterday.

Wright (63) and Griffiths (52) combined to lead East Metro to 4-185 after 40 overs and in reply, the Sharks fell short as they were dismissed for 133 in the 33rd over.

After winning the toss and sending East Metro in to bat, the Sharks were put on the back foot as Wright and Griffiths batted with patience and timed their shots well to put East Metro in a good position early.

The Sharks got the breakthrough when Grace Mills snared the wicket of Wright who skied one to be caught in slips by Sophie Strickland.

Some good fielding from the Sharks saw them peg back East Metro’s run rate, as they found the stumps on the three occasions to see them to 4-185.

Mills was the Sharks sole wicket taker with 1-29 from eight overs while Primrose Wohlers also bowled tightly finishing with 0-29 from her eight overs.

Chasing 186 for the win, the Sharks started well with Elly Donald (28) and Amy Yates (30) putting on a 62-run opening stand.

Yates and Donald fell in quick succession and soon the Sharks found themselves at 2-64.

Despite Mills’ top score of 37, wickets continued to fall around her and the Sharks struggled to combine for a much needed partnership.

Eat Metro’s bowling attack proved too strong as Claire Dyett (2-11 from four) and Caitlyn Parker (2-22 from four) topped the side’s wickets to help dismiss the Sharks for 133, crowning East Metro as the state champions.

In addition to her 63-run knock, Wright (1-13 from four) also took the important wicket of Yates, earning the Player-of-the-Final award.

Maintaining her incredible championship form, Wright was named Player-of-the-Series, completing the tournament as the second highest run-scorer with 345 – her highest knock being an unbeaten 98.
