International cricket to electrify MCG again

International cricket will return to the MCG for the first time since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Final, in December when Australia and the West Indies meet in the Boxing Day Test.

This will be followed by a blockbuster one-day international against India on January 17 and a T20 International , also against India, on January 29.

The fixture on January 29 will be a double header with the world champion Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars also meeting India in a WT20 match preceding the men’s clash.

Australia will be looking to continue their form at the home of cricket which saw them defeat New Zealand in the World Cup Final in March in front of a world-record crowd of 93,013 people, while they also knocked over England and India at the venue earlier in the season.

The MCG will hold no demons for India, however, who claimed two victories at the ground during the World Cup, including a pulsating match against South Africa where 86,876 fans attended.

Cricket Victoria CEO Tony Dodemaide said there was a lot for cricket fans to be excited about this summer.

“We saw earlier this year just how much Victorians love international cricket at the MCG,” Dodemaide said.

“I was lucky enough to be at the India and South Africa game in February and the atmosphere created was just as loud as the Final.

“It would be fantastic to get all those fans to the match on January 17 to see the two highest ranked one-day teams face off again.

“The Boxing Day Test remains a tradition for so many Victorians to come to the MCG and celebrate the festive period while support the national side and the Twenty20 international on January 29 promises to be a great night out for the whole family.”

In other fixture news, the fifth instalment of the KFC Big Bash League (BBL) will begin on Thursday, December 17 with the Final slated for Saturday, January 23.

In an exciting development this season, the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) will kick off on Saturday, December 5, with the Final to be a double header with the men’s Final.

Fixtures for both BBL and WBBL competitions will be announced in the coming days.
