Molineux named Victorian Under-18 captain

Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit young gun Sophie Molineux has been named captain of a 13-player squad for next year's Under-18 National Championships in Ballarat.

Held from January 14 to 20, the squad, which was announced by Cricket Victoria today, sees Molineux return to the side after claiming last season’s Player of the Tournament.

The 16-year-old was the highest run-scorer for Victoria with 155 runs and also claimed 19 wickets for the tournament, at an incredible average of just 3.9.

The left-hand batter will be joined by fellow returning 2013-14 members Hope Irvine, Makinley Blows, Claire Nolte and Rhiann O’Donnell, along with Kyra Black from the 2012-13 side.

Bringing further competition experience to the team, six players, Georgia Wareham, Hayleigh Brennan, Melina Ayres, Annabel Martin, Madeline Wright and Tayla Vlaeminck, have been elevated from last season’s under-15 squad.

“The squad has been selected through an intensive process which included the winter academy training program, the Country and Metro series in Bundalaguah where we played four matches, along with club cricket performances also being taken into account,” Victorian under-18 coach Duncan Harrison said.

“We believe we have selected a very balanced squad, with all the skills sets covered with six pace bowling options, four spinners with nice variety including left-arm orthodox, a leg-spinner and two off-spinners, two wicketkeepers and tremendous batting depth through the group.”

Aiming to go one better than last season’s runner-up finish to New South Wales, the squad will now embark on an intensive training program in preparation for the National Championships in January.

In addition to Victoria’s squad of 13, the state has also selected a squad of 18 players who will train for selection in a Victorian Development Squad.

The Victorian Development Squad will fill the void left by Auckland who will not be participating in January’s Under-18 National Championships, which will eliminate the bye.

The squad will be finalised after the Under-18 VicSpirit Pathway Championships (December 8 to 12) with performances at the Championships and in Bartercard Premier Cricket being taken into account upon selection.
