Short and Walker selected in initial Under-19 squad

Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers Matt Short and Guy Walker have been selected in an initial 18-man squad in preparation for the Under-19 National Championships.

Eighteen-year-old Short has impressed early in his career, making his Victorian debut in last month’s Matador One-Day Cup where he played three matches and contributed with 30 runs in his first game.

The right-hand bat and off-spin bowler also earned the Melbourne Renegades Development Rookie contract in BBL|03.

“Matt is a multi-skilled cricketer whose talent has been recognised through him earning a rookie contract with the Bushrangers and debuting in the Matador Cup,” Victorian under-19 coach Jarrad Loughman said.

“He’s a natural striker of the ball, an improving off-spinner that gets good bounce and can turn the ball.

“To compliment this, Matt is a dynamic fielder with fantastic hands, offering good all-round ability to any team.”

Having returned to Bartercard Premier Cricket last weekend as a batter, Footscray Edgewater pace bowler Walker will continue to work his way back from injury.

“Guy is an emerging pace bowling all-rounder who represented Australia at the Under-19 World Cup and also played in a First XI premiership with Footscray in 2013-14,” Loughman said.

“Injuries have hindered Guy’s start to the season but we are really confident that he will be up and running in the lead up to this year’s Championships.”

Australian Under-19 representatives Sam Harper and Liam Banthorpe have been elevated from last year’s under-17s side and have been named in the extended squad.

After being named Player of the Series in the Australian Under-19 tour of Sri Lanka, Prahran spinner Sam Grimwade has also been included in the squad, in addition to the Under-17 Victorian side.

“Sam is an exciting off-spinning prospect and has performed well at Under-17 National Championships, Australian under-19 level and Premier First XI level,” Loughman said.

“Sam bowls with excellent control and also drifts and spins it considerably due to the amount of work he imparts on the ball.

“He is a switched on cricketer who thinks clearly about the game which is a great attribute to possess as a young spinner.”

Following the phase one trials in the pre-season, the Cobram/Barooga series and early season club cricket, selectors were provided with a good base to narrow the squad down.

“Again this year, selection has been extremely tough given the depth of talent available,” Loughman said.

“However, the state youth selection panel believe that the 18 players selected provide a good balance of skill sets combined with solid performances and young cricketers with potential.

“The task of selecting the final squad will be even harder, which is hopefully a good sign for the future of Victorian cricket.”

The extended squad will now train through November as club cricket continues to unfold with the final squad of 13 to compete at the National Championships named at the end of the month.

The Under-19 National Championships will be held from January 12 to 22, 2015 in Adelaide.
