The large group flocked to the first Women’s Cricket Masterclass session for 2016-17 much to the delight of organisers, including North Metro Cricket Association – Women’s Cricket Co-ordinator and Baord Member Lenore Smith.

“It was an amazing turnout on the night. It was a whole lot of skills, fun and giggles which was great. Of all our participants, nearly three quarters had never engaged with cricket before so it was a fantastic experience for all,” Smith said.

Organisers were blown away by the numbers, with a total of 45 women and girls from 11 different clubs taking part in the session. Those in attendance were aged between 14 and 64, and 30 of them were new to cricket and had never experienced the game before.

Along with all the women and girls who took part in the fun, energetic and practical skill sessions, a large number of coaches, board members, support staff and spectators were in attendance to help make the night one to remember.

“The feedback we had was fantastic and there was real electricity in the atmosphere. We’re looking forward to our session next week as well.”

The masterclass is conducted under the banner of NMCA Women’s Cricket Competition, an extension of the overaching North Metro Cricket Association.

By helping to build the skills and confidence of women and girls in cricket over the last year, the NMCA have helped grow the competition from four clubs in the inaugural season last year, to ten in total.

Such a strong result in attendance and growth echoes the core values and effort of Cricket Victoria to engage more women and girls in cricket, and make it a sport for all Victorians.
