U16 Male State Champs: Milne century sees Emus through

The Inner East Emus have advanced to the semi finals of the Under-16s Male State Championships after they defeated the Southern Pioneers yesterday.

A brilliant century from Sam Milne set the platform for a big total for the Emus, and in response the Pioneers simply couldn’t get within striking distance.

Milne (100) put on 83 runs in an opening partnership with Luke Davidson (26), while Lionel Hunt (35), Jonathan Catania (23*), and Jonathan Merlo (22) all chipped in with starts.

In response, the Pioneers also had plenty of starts, but no one could kick on and score 100 – or at least a 50.

Lachlan De Zilwa (22), Saad Khattack (22), Joshua Battle (22), and Andrey Fernando (26) all couldn’t capitalise on the good progress they were making, while Durras Seccull (44*) was left stranded after running out of partners again.

The Pioneers finished with 9-182 from their 50 overs, as Catania took 3-32 with the ball for the Emus.

The Emus’ semi final opponent will be the South East Bayside Breakers who defeated the North East Knights in their quarter final.

Winning the toss and batting first, the Breakers set a very competitive total of 6-239 from their 50 overs thanks to some quality partnerships and a ‘run-a-ball’ 79 from Shubham Bhargave.

The Breakers’ recognised batsmen got the job done, with Austin Heldt (44), Harry Wardlaw (37), and Bhargave making significant contributions.

The Knights ran out of time in their chase due to the loss of consistent wickets.

They were ultimately bowled out for 182 in the 49th over, with Bradley Melville (53) the only one to do any major damage.

The Barwon Rockets’ 7-222 was sufficient enough to hold off the Northern Falcons in another quarter final clash.

Jarrod Walters hit an unbeaten 45 to lift the Rockets’ total to a strong position, while Leyton Thulborn (40) did the job at the top of the innings.

In reply, the Falcons’ innings was a bit of a roller coaster ride, with Christian Snelson (55) and Connor Rutland (43) combining in the middle order to give their side a chance.

They needed to consolidate however, as their dismissals led to the collapse of the innings.

The Falcons were bowled out for 200 in the 49th over, falling 23 runs short of a semi final berth.

The Rockets will play the well-rested Western Spirit in their semi final, after they took care of the South East Sharks in quick time.

Archit Shukla starred again, running through the Sharks’ batting order with 4-3 (4).

The Sharks could only manage to score 66 runs before being bowled out after 37 overs.

The in-form Daniel Venables led the Spirit to victory with an unbeaten 37 as his side took the win in just 17.1 overs with the loss of one wicket.

To recap, the Western Spirit will play the Barwon Rockets and the Inner East Emus will take on the South East Bayside Breakers in today’s semi finals.
