Under-15s go down in another close one

After being sent in to bat, the Victorian girls were bowled out for 112 in the 33rd over and for the second consecutive day, the game went down to the final over with South Australia passing Victoria’s 112 seven wickets down.

Victorian Captain Teagan Brett was a shining light in a disappointing batting performance; finishing with a well-compiled 30 off just 31 deliveries.

Continuing on from her impressive 45 in game one, opener Sophie Van de Heuvel added an entertaining 21 at the top of the order before being bowled.

Through the middle of the innings wickets were falling quite regularly and not allowing any partnerships, consequently, Victoria posted a score of 112.

With the ball, Tahlia Simpson got the first breakthrough, sneaking between bat and pad to rattle the stumps, and that had SA 1-17 after five overs.

A sharp return catch off her own bowling saw spinner Erika Quinn pick up the second SA wicket which left them 2-32 after 13 overs.

Skipper Brett threw the ball to Maddison Baird who picked up back-to-back wickets in two overs, to have SA 5-72 after 26 overs.

When Brett also pulled off a brilliant piece of fielding which resulted in a direct hit run out with only one stump to aim at, SA had slumped to 6-77 still requiring 36 runs for victory.

SA had fought their way to 6-91 before Van de Heuvel took a catch off the bowling of Quinn to give the Victorians a real chance; SA required 22 runs with only three wickets in hand.

Sadly for the Victorian girls, three wickets were enough as SA passed the total in the final over with three wickets in hand.

Victoria will play Queensland tomorrow at Blacktown International Sports Park #1, in their bid to register their first win of the National Championships.
