Under-15s undefated run continues

Victoria's under-15s remain undefeated in the National Championships after their sixth straight win with Twenty20 victories over ACT/NSW Country and the CA XI yesterday.

Their first win of the day was by seven wickets as they restricted CA XI to just 6-56 from their 20 overs, while in the second game ACT/NSW Country made 4-97 and despite a tight finish, Victoria came out on top and recorded a five wicket victory.

It was captain Annabel Sutherland who was the stand out player in both fixtures with 40 in each innings, hitting 11 fours in the day.

The CA XI began with a strong partnership of 37 and it took a run out courtesy of Sophie Van De Heuvel to dismiss Sarah Turner for 23.

A single was added to the total before two wickets fell, opener Ruby Strange was bowled by Eve Sheehan for 7 and Hannah Faux was caught Van De Heuvel off Rosie Wynd for one.

A 12-run stand then ensued between Zoe Fleming and Shania John before Fleming was dismissed for five.

Clementine Ryan-Fuller then took the fifth and sixth wickets; John was bowled for two and Tayla Mittelstadt was caught by Sheehan for a single with the score on 56.

Chasing just 57 to win, Victoria lost two early wickets as Van De Heuvel was stumped without scoring and Teagan Brett was caught Faux off the bowling of Macey Brereton for a single.

Number four, Alana D’Aquino, and Sutherland then shared a 27-run partnership before D’Aquino was caught by Turner off Strange for 10 with the score on 34.

Wynd then joined her skipper at the crease and the pair saw Victoria secure a seven-wicket victory.

The innings continued until the CA XI had bowled their 20 overs which gave Sutherland the chance to continue batting and she scored 40 before being run out by Turner with the score on 106 and Victoria finished on 7-107.

Once again Victoria began a double-headed day with a victory and looked to take that momentum into the afternoon’s fixture, this time against ACT/NSW Country.

Victoria lost the toss and fielded first with Erika Quinn and Bella Gietzmann opening the bowling.

Quinn got an early breakthrough as she had Dharmini Chauhan caught by Emma Sands for four with the score on seven.

Opener Anita Handono was then joined at the crease by her captain, Rachel Trenaman and the pair put on 35 before Handono was run out by Gietzmann for 20.

Another wicket came after just two runs had been added as Wynd had Lily Tassell caught by Sheehan for nought.

Trenaman then dominated the strike as she shared a 29-run partnership with Sarah Young before Sheehan struck as she bowled Young for eight.

An unbeaten fifth-wicket stand of 24 then ensued with the skipper making 49 and Jessica Davidson eight which saw ACT/NSW Country finish on 4-97.

Victoria again lost an early wicket as they chased 98 with opener Van De Heuvel bowled by Mollie Mullen for eight with the score on nine.

Brett joined Sutherland at the crease and the pair put on 39 before Victoria’s number three was run out by Mullen for 28.

The skipper ensured the state did not suffer a collapse as she shared a 27-run partnership with D’Aquino before the number four was trapped lbw to Taylah Knight for four.

Saxon-Jones came in at five and again played a supporting role in a 14-run stand before she was bowled by Knight for three.

With just two runs required for victory it appeared Sutherland would remain unbeaten, but good bowling from Knight saw her pick up her third wicket of the day as the Victorian captain hit a catch to Jasmine Goode and departed for 40.

Wynd and Ryan-Fuller ensured the side remained unbeaten as they won by five wickets.

The Under-15 National Championships returns to 40-over matches today and sees Victoria play Queensland who sit second on the ladder.
