Victorian Women’s Imparja Cup squad

A 12-player Victorian Women's Imparja Cup squad has been named for next year's national tournament in Alice Springs.

Staged from February 8 to 14, the squad will be captained by former Commonwealth Bank VicSpirt player Renee Melton, who was the team’s sole member of the Women’s All-star squad last year.

The squad has also seen two new inclusions from last year’s side including Coburg’s Jess Martin and Lucknow’s Molly Ward.

“We have a pretty young squad with Fiona, Renee and Kareena being the only members over 20 years of age in the side,” Victorian Women’s Imparja Cup coach Keith Jansz said.

“We’ve got a mixed bag but given the fact they are very keen and talented, I think that they’ll be extremely competitive.

“I’m really keen to see how our new additions in Jess and Molly go as they will certainly strengthen the team in all aspects.”

In preparation for the tournament, the team will gather for a three-day camp at Village Green in Strath Creek early next year.

“This is a really good development opportunity for most of these girls and hopefully through the camp, training sessions and the tournament we can up skill them,” Jansz said.

Melbourne Stars Noogal caps

On Saturday night (20/12), the Melbourne Stars will show their support for the Women’s Imparja Cup team when they wear a special edition cap during the warm up of their encounter with the Hobart Hurricanes at the MCG.

The cap features a design that incorporates the Victorian Indigenous cricket logo – Noogal Toengorrt Tani – which means win, success and belong, along with some of Victoria’s Indigenous cricketers Aboriginal totems.

Each cap has the name and number of the Stars player or coaching staff embroidered on the back and will be signed and auctioned off with proceeds going towards sending the Women’s Imparja Cup squad to the national tournament.
