Great day at the Victorian All-Abilities Cricket Carnival 2008
Casey Fields again hosted the Victorian All Abilities Cricket Carnival on Sunday 10th February. It was a fantastic day which saw well over one hundred participants enjoy cricket across the three categories of games. There were some highly competitive matches in the State League, while other participants in the 10 Over Tonk and No Boundaries Cricket enjoyed the opportunity to develop their cricket skills and participate in a team atmosphere. The State League was again won by the Barwon Region who were consistently the best team on the day. It was great to see so many players, carers and family members enjoying another cricketing opportunity.
Many thanks to the City of Casey and the Melbourne Cricket Club for their support of the event. Thanks also to the Cranbourne and Casey-South Melbourne Cricket Clubs who hosted the games and had a great presence at both grounds.
An 'All Star Victorian Team' was named at the conclusion of the day, this team was picked from pla
yers involved in the State League tournament. Congratulations to the following who were named in the team:
Gavin Hicks (C) - Goldfield Miners
Aaron Borracci - Barwon
Matt Cutting - Barwon
Brian Ellis - Gippsland
David Jenkins - Ballarat
Michael Massarotti - Ballarat
Brian Mussared - Gippsland
Ray Taylor - Grampians
Dwayne Templeton - Barwon
Damian Yole - Goldfield Miners
Thanks again to everyone involved in the day. Cricket Victoria look forward to seeing even more participants enjoy the opportunity to play cricket at next years carnival.
Victorian All-Abilities State Carnival
The date for the Victorian All-Abilities State Carnival has been set with the event being staged on Sunday February 10. It is proposed that the Carnival will again be held at Casey Field in Cranbourne.
Australia wins Tri-Series
The Australian team for people with an intellectual disability has won a three way series against England and South Africa. The Australians were undefeated through the series and held on to win the final against South Africa. Victorian Gavan Hicks won the Player of Series for his consistent effort with bat, ball and keeping gloves.
VDCAC is composed of people representing various stakeholders interested in developing cricket participation opportunities for people with a disability. The role of the Committee is to advise Cricket Victoria management on issues relating to the establishment and maintenance of initiatives designed to encourage further participation of people with a disability.
Victoria is the first Australian state to hold a State cricket tournament for people with disabilities. Held at Casey Fields for the past two years, the carnival provides the opportunity for people of all levels of ability to play cricket against others from all around Victoria. With three divisions, there is a game available for everybody. The ‘State League' is for cricketers with a greater level of ability and is a hotly contested competition. The ‘Ten over Tonk' competition and the ‘No Boundaries Cricket' provide opportunities for everybody to play.
Cricket Victoria is committed to supporting the continual development of participation opportunities for people with a disability. While there are a number of opportunities currently available in the regional area's of Geelong, Gippsland and the Grampians, there are also a number of pilot projects that aim to provide similar cricket opportunities across the state.
Cricket Victoria has available for free distribution the resource ‘Beyond the Boundary'. This resource provides information and case study examples of how cricket and cricket clubs can become more embracing of all people wanting to be involved. To gain a copy of the resource please contact Cricket Victoria on 9653-1100.
Opportunities to become involved in cricket, either as a player or a volunteer are ever increasing. To find out how to become involved with cricket please call Cricket Victoria on 9653-1100.
All-Abilities Cricket Rules
The rules described are used by Cricket Victoria to govern games of cricket played as part of the Victorian State All-Abilities Cricket Carnival. They may be used as guidelines for any organised cricket played by people with a disability. it should be noted that the enjoyment of all participants is the foremost consideration in all forms of cricket played at a community level. For this reason there may be a need to use some flexibility in implementing these rules.
Two games have been developed to cater for a variety of ability levels. Outdoor cricket is played on a cricket oval and No Boundaries cricket can be played on a court surface (eg. tennis or netball) either indoors or outdoors. No Boundaries rules may suit players with less ability.
