Cricket Victoria Drought Response
Strategies for Clubs
To minimise the impact of Water Restrictions, cricket Clubs and Associations are strongly urged to work cooperatively with Councils and other ground users. Clubs can support Councils in a joint endeavour to ensure that no play is lost in the following ways:
1. Working with Council
- Ensure Council has up-to-date contact details for your Club with 2 members listed
- Attend Council information sessions pertaining to the water restrictions for ground users
- Develop a close liaison with Council and relevant staff and work cooperatively
- Where Council implements a formal ground audit or inspection process, meet Council expectations by providing the information sought within the specified time-frame
- Participate fully in ground monitoring processes where Council provides the opportunity
2. Educating Members
- Clubs to educate all of their members on the implications of the water restrictions and what they can do to help alleviate the situation
- Associations to educate all of their Clubs on the implications of the water restrictions and seek their full cooperation to minimise possible disruptions to the season
3. Risk Minimisation
- Ensure your Club has The Australian Cricket National Club Risk Protection Program which is the standard cover provided by Cricket Australia through JLT
- Ensure the Club is Incorporated
- Use the JLT Ground Assessment form in the absence of a specific Council form to conduct a weekly audit of your ground. See JLT guidelines.
- Where potential risks are identified, take precautionary action and notify the Council immediately if appropriate
- Undertake a ground inspection each Thursday leaving time to rectify problems prior to scheduled play at the weekend
- Use markers to place rough or dangerous areas (eg on-ground turf practice wickets) outside of the field of play
- Involve umpires and the away team in the joint inspection of a ground prior to play commencing
4. Preserving the Ground Surface
- Adopt strategies to reduce on-ground usage
- Minimise wear and tear in high traffic areas by rotating repetitive drills and activities on different areas of the ground
- Use the entire ground rather than a small area
- Where appropriate or possible, conduct activities off the ground
- Minimise on-ground training sessions and activities
- Seek alternative venues for training such as indoors or asphalt areas
- Refrain from using the ground for social or mid-week matches
