Getting started in Umpiring

The recruitment of new umpires generally takes place in the winter months and begins with the Cricket Victoria Winter Classes program.

Most competitions are in demand for umpires, therefore it isn't too difficult getting started.  Introductions with umpiring groups can also be arranged through Cricket Victoria if required.  For further information contact the CV Umpiring Department on (03) 9653 1100.

Cricket Victoria Umpire training is best broken down into the following sections:

EDUCATION

OFF SEASON
Cricket Victoria conducts a series of Winter Classes during early May to late June each year.  The program consists of 1 evening class (approx. 2 hours) per week for 6 weeks and outlines the Laws of Cricket in detail followed by an exam on night 7.  Classes are theory based and conducted by CV Umpiring Manager, Bob Stratford, and Senior CV Umpires utilising the Cricket Australia Umpiring Guide (an interactive CD Rom) as a presentation tool.

Lectures are generally held at two locations, Holmesglen TAFE and Bundoora RMIT and registration is essential.  For information regarding this season's Winter Classes and to download an Application Form, Click Here

Cricket Victoria generally recruits umpires to its panel from this program and also introduce prospective umpires to "local associations" on request.

IN SEASON
Once involved in an umpiring group there are additional nights of education provided during the season by the group advisor.

PRE-SEASON
Cricket Victoria conducts a bi-annual Seminar during September, (the next one to be held in 2006), that concentrates more on practical sessions leading in to the commencement of the season in October.  Information regarding "SINS" will be posted on the website closer to the date.

ACCREDITATION
Once you have joined an umpiring group and are actively involved, you can apply to register and undertake the National Umpiring Accreditation - Level 2.  This is a self-paced, continuous improvement program which is both theory and practical based.
