MAXIMISE THE VICTORIAN COMMUNITY'S PARTICIPATION IN CRICKET
From the backyard to the beach to the Boxing Day Test we want Victorians of all ages and backgrounds to watch, play and celebrate cricket in all its forms. Attracting and keeping cricketers on the field is crucial to the sport's continued growth, as is working with our grassroots clubs to create a sustainable future for them. We need to ensure we provide appropriate facilities and plan effectively for cricket in key growth areas, and we must respond to issues such as drought and the recruitment of umpires and volunteers.
PERFORMANCE TARGETS TO 2011
- Formal participation exceeds 200,000 cricketers, including 30,000 female cricketers (equals 9% growth overall and includes 25% growth for females). Participation increases in lifestyle/non-traditional forms of the game, such as beach, street and indoor cricket.
- All cricketers have access to appropriate facilities throughout the season, including:
- No loss of grounds because of drought or other reason
- Appropriate cricket facilities in each key growth area
- Enforceable determination/agreement(s) on season dates
- Accredited umpire numbers increase 20%
- Every club has a nationally accredited coach
- Volunteer recruitment and retention increases significantly
MAIN SUPPORTING STRATEGIES:
- Ensure sustainability of grounds in conjunction with government and other sports:
- Appropriate drought-proofing/water management
- Defined season dates
- Greater utilisation of current facilities
- New facilities in growth areas
- Actively promote participation in playing as well as coaching, umpiring and administration
- Match game and competition formats to the needs and interests of participants. For example, work with affiliates to stabilise club numbers and increase participation in non-traditional game formats such as Twenty20
Maintain/increase focus on female participation in cricket. Implement Cricket Victoria's female cricket strategy in line with Cricket Australia's ‘Females in Cricket' strategy- Expand school cricket programs through partnerships with secondary and primary schools. Use the ‘Have A Go' program to create links between schools and clubs throughout Victoria
- Continue to encourage greater participation from community groups who historically have not been involved in cricket
- Actively communicate with and recognise volunteers, and ensure they have access to Australia's best administrative and educational resources
- Offer quality coach education and training programs to the general community
