Victoria’s mixed start
After defeating Queensland in its opening match of the carnival, Victoria then suffered a round two loss to Tasmania.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Victoria started well against the reigning premiers, Queensland.
Debutant Rohan Wight combined with fellow opener Nathan Gardiner (20), setting the tone early and piling on quick runs.
With some powerful stroke play, Wight raced to his maiden Imparja Cup half-century, before being dismissed for a knock of 68 off 36 deliveries, including four boundaries and six maximums.
“I felt that it was important to take advantage of the power play overs and Nathan and I got us off to a good start,” Wight said.
Some late order hitting from Fletcher Stewart (21*) saw the Victorians set a target of 6-146.
In reply, Queensland started well with Bradley Stout (35) and Preston White (13) combining for a 53-run partnership.
However, the Victorian attack, led by Brenden Miller (4-42) and Ptrick Jackson (2-27), proved too strong, restricting Queensland to 9-138.
“We emphasised the importance of getting off to a good start and to knock off last year’s champions was a strong boost for the boys,” Wight said.
In its second game, Victoria lost the toss and was sent into field by Tasmania.
A strong batting performance from captain Callan Morse (76) saw the Tasmanians complete its innings on 3-149.
In return, Victoria was unable to emulate its batting performance from game one, being bowled out for 100 with captain Ben Abbatangelo top scoring on 24.
“During the game Ben showed glimpses of the batsmanship that earned him a Community Rookie contract,” Wight said.
“However, as a team we didn’t bat or bowl well enough and Tasmania thoroughly deserved the victory.”
Victoria will now turn its attention to today’s clashes against the Northern Territory and New South Wales.
