29 Victorians named in Under-17 National Championships squads

An unprecedented number of Victorian talent will be on show at the Under-17 National Championships in Brisbane next month with 29 Victorians selected.

There will be 16 more Victorians participating in the series than last year with Victoria entering two squads, representing the metropolitan and country regions, for the first time and three Victorians also named in the Australian Under-16 XI squad, which is made up of the Team of the Tournament from the School Sports Australia Under-15 Championships.

Matthew Elliott will coach the Victoria Country squad with the former Australian Test opener excited about the talent coming through the pathway.

“It’s a huge positive for Victorian cricket that we have 29 kids exposed to state and national talent managers this year,” Elliott said.

“All the coaches were really impressed with the high quality of training and the two squads that we have put together.

“We started with two squads of 33 and 34 players and after five sessions at the MCG and Maribyrnong Sports Academy we reduced the squad for two trial games at Point Cook following that.

“We’ve got two strong bowling line-ups that will be well-suited to the Queensland conditions and we are really excited about watching them play.

“We also feel like we have two versatile batting line-ups that will be suited to the one-day format.”

27 years after Elliott made his Victorian Under-17 debut, Matthew’s son Sam is following in his father’s footsteps after being named in the Victoria Metro squad.

Nathan Murphy, Zac Evans and Will Sutherland, son of Cricket Australia CEO James, have been included in the inaugural Australian Under-16 squad with the team to also play against an international opponent in Bowral in November.

Murphy, Evans and Sutherland will also spend time at the Bupa National Cricket Centre in Brisbane as part of the National Player Pathway initiative.

Nine members of the inaugural Australian Cricket Pathway Rookie squad named last month have been selected to go to the National Championships with Shubham Bhargave, Fraser Ellis, Wilson McGillvray, Zach Mevissen, Blake Parsons and Tom Rogers joining Murphy, Evans and Sutherland in the tournament.

The Under-17 National Championships will begin on September 28 with each team to play eight one-day matches.
