All abilities cricketer John Alcock was recognised for his outstanding service to the Maribyrnong Indoor Sports Centre during the 2013-14 cricket season.

Alcock, who has an intellectual disability, has devoted countless hours to all abilities cricket.

More than 20 years ago, Alcock became a member of the Maribyrnong All Abilities Indoor Cricket team and has since played in multiple premierships.

His best batting performance was in the1996 semi-final where he scored 52 from four overs.

Throughout the years, Alcock has developed both his cricketing and leadership skills, quickly becoming a mentor at the club.

In recent times, Alcock has dedicated his time to manning the scoreboard at Essendon Maribyrnong Park.

Attending games on a weekly basis, Alcock has become a revered figure at the club.

“John’s a great person to have around the club, not only with his help in volunteering to man our scoreboard, but in also providing some very valuable feedback and encouragement to our players,” EMP captain Briana Binch said.

“He’s knowledge of cricket is great and we’re very lucky to have him involved at EMP.”

Returning the favour, the girls from EMP have also ventured down to the indoor centre to show their support for Alcock’s cricket career.

“After hearing about John’s indoor matches, a group of girls decided to go down to the Footscray and cheer him on,” Binch said.

“He’s a very passionate cricketer and enjoys getting out there and having fun.

“It was great to see him in that environment.”
