A long serving thank you

Cricket Victoria honoured 23 long serving volunteers at the MCG when it hosted the 50-year Service Luncheon last week.

Recipients reminisced about the old days as they were recognised for their endless dedication to Victorian cricket as administrators, umpires, coaches, delegates, players and more.

Among the volunteers recognised was Camrea Cricket Club’s Ian Carter.

Carter started playing for the Camrea in 1964, held the role Secretary for 15 consecutive years and upon retirement became an umpire in the North Metro Cricket Association.

The long-serving volunteer noted that it was the camaraderie of cricket is what has kept him in the game.

“The enjoyment, friendship and being out there playing the game is what I love about cricket,” Carter said.

“My favourite moment would have to be playing with the Vets and winning five premierships in a row.”

On the day, Jill Crowther was also recognised for her service to the Victorian Women’s Cricket Association where she became the Match Results and Registration Secretary in 1965 and held that position until the VWCA’s wind up in 2014.

Crowther, who currently performs the same duties for Cricket Victoria’s Women’s Premier and Community competitions, also noted that her favourite cricket memory had been when she captained he side, Melbourne Ladies Cricket Club, for a come-from-behind premiership victory.

“I love cricket, it’s a fantastic game,” Crowther said.
