A ton of style

The Northcote batsman, who hit his first Premier Cricket ton on Saturday, will meet up with other members of the Indigenous cricket squad to play a series of practice matches in the coming weeks.

This will be his third trip to Alice Springs, and second as skipper, after coming close to tasting glory with Victoria back in February.

“A lot of the guys travel from places like Horsham and Sale, so the squad is made up of players all over Victoria,” Abbatangelo said.

“This is only my second year of playing, so it was very pleasing to be named captain, and showed the people involved have faith in me and saw some good values, it is definitely an honour.”

The Imparja Cup is Australia’s National Indigenous Cricket Carnival, and consists of 96 games, played at seven different venues across five divisions.

Abbatangelo will lead Victoria in the State and Territories Men’s section, a T20 competition played against the other states in the country.

New South Wales are the current holders having beaten Queensland in the final of the last tournament.

Abbatangelo’s young squad will have to cope with the harsh conditions Alice Springs will serve up at that time of year.

He will also supported by the team’s number one fan.

“My mum doesn’t miss a game,” Abbatangelo said.

“She’ll be getting up there to watch the boys, she really looks forward to it. We know all about the conditions in Alice Springs.

“I think when we travel it’s the hottest part of the year up there.

“We’ll be playing in high 30s to early 40s every match.

“But we’ll just have to cope, we’re just all looking forward to the tournament, we’ve got a great set of lads, everyone loves to get around each other and hang out as a team.”

And for the future?

Well Abbatangelo is committed to helping Northcote improve its position in the ladder from now until the end of the season.

He also has plans to better himself in England in the off season.

“It would be great experience going overseas, living in a different climate and a different culture,” he added.
