Australia鈥檚 5-0 whitewash

Voges’ unbeaten 112 from 106 balls saw Australia post an imposing 5-274 from its 50 overs.

The 33-year-old’s knock included 10 fours and two sixes as he steered the home side from a perilous 3-63 in the 19th over to the innings close.

“It was a massive relief, elation and excitement – I had a lot of fun today,” Voges said.

“It’s amazing how quickly things can change around.

“I guess you never say never … the great thing is, the selectors have brought me back when I’m playing well.

“You have to make the most of it while it lasts.”

The West Indies won the toss and elected to field, instantly vindicating that decision when Tino Best produced a fiery opening spell, bowling stand-in Aussie skipper Shan Watson with the opening ball of the match before removing Commonwealth Bank Bushranger Aaron Finch for one to have the home side on the back foot at 2-2.

Best frequently reached speeds of up to 150kph and Phil Hughes and Shaun Marsh were forced to weather the early storm.

The pair put on 61 before Hughes was caught by Kieron Pollard off the bowling of Dwayne Bravo for 29.

When Marsh fell shortly after to Bravo for 40, the Aussies were in trouble at 4-82 in the 25th over, struggling against the variations of Sunil Narine, who was unlucky to finish wicketless.

But an excellent 111-run partnership between Voges and recalled wicket-keeper Brad Haddin took Australia from a likely sub-par total to 4-193 in the 42nd over.

When Haddin was caught in the deep pulling Kemar Roach for 43 off 45 balls, James Faulkner then combined with Voges for an unbeaten 81-run stand from just 51 balls.

Australia took 100 from the final 10 overs to set the Windies 275 for victory.

Best’s first four overs reaped 2-15 but he leaked 47 from his final six to finish with the unflattering figures of 2-71 from 10.

Dwayne Bravo (2-62 from eight) was the only other multiple wicket-taker, while Kemar Roach (1-52 off 10) also claimed a victim.

With the ball, Mitchell Johnson came out breathing fire, delivering a fast opening spell to claim Kieran Powell for two.

Newly crowned ODY Player-of-the-Year Clint McKay probed away in his customary off stump channel, the Windies batsmen struggling to score from either bowler early.

Johnson Charles received a life when on nine, dropped by Finch off the bowling of McKay at second slip.

The opener made the Aussies pay as he combined with Darren Bravo for a 106-run stand before the latter was caught neatly by James Faulkner at mid-off for 33 off the bowling of Xavier Doherty.

It was the break the hosts needed and Johnson, returning for his second spell of the evening, worked Dwayne Bravo over beautifully with three consecutive slower balls from around the wicket, one of which was skied by the former Bushranger but dropped by Phil Hughes at cover, before he produced a beautiful fast inswinger that cannoned into middle and off.

At 3-129 the match was delicately poised, and SCG centurion Kieron Pollard join Charles in the middle.

Charles, let off twice by the DRS and put down at deep cover by Ryan Carters, went on to post his first century for the West Indies in any format, but he fell immediately after, caught behind square by Ben Cutting off McKay.

His innings included eight fours and one six during his 12-1 ball stay.

Cameos from Devon Thomas (19 off 18) and Darren Sammy (23 off 18) helped lift the run rate but the Windies steadily lost wickets in the final 15 overs, unable to build any momentum and when Pollard fell for 45 the tourists were 7-234 in the 47th

Ultimately they were a batsman short, bowled out for 257 on the penultimate ball of the match.

McKay (3-52 off 9.5) and Johnson (3-50 off 10) were exceptional and there was a wicket each for Cutting (1-53 off 10), Faulkner (1-47 off 10) and Doherty (1-46 off 9).

Finch’s solitary over cost two runs and Shane Watson would have been very happy with the fact that all six of his bowlers got through with an economy rate of under 5.5.

Voges was named man-of the-match for his hundred, while Mitchell Starc was named man-of-the-series.
