Box Hill and Dandenong to meet in VWCA Grand Final

Box Hill and Dandenong will clash for the Agnes McDonnell Trophy in the Essteele Premier Firsts Final at Butler Oval in Frankston this Saturday.

The Mustangs will be striving for the ultimate success after falling at the final hurdle in the past two seasons, while the Lions will play in the Final for the first in five years.

Box Hill, who has never claimed the Agnes McDonnell Trophy, will be led by Southern Stars and VicSpirit superstar Meg Lanning.

Arguably the finest batter in the game at the moment, Lanning has made 568 runs, at an average of 81.14 for the Mustangs this season, including a record 241 against Melbourne.

Lanning’s sister Anna will be another key player for Box Hill having been in fine form with bat and ball where she has amassed 416 runs and 18 wickets.

Box Hill’s fortunes in the match may rest with their younger brigade of up and coming stars.

Sarah Chancellor-Goddard, Julia Crockett Grills, Rebecca Carter and Kate Dempsey all represented Victoria at the Under-18 National Championships in January and should they fire, the Mustangs will be hard to beat.

Standing in their way is a Dandenong side full of confidence after they defeated powerhouse Essendon Maribyrnong Park in last Saturday’s semi-final.

Southern Stars pace bowler Julie Hunter was the architect behind the Lions’ stunning win with a brilliant spell of 4-6 from 10 overs which included seven maidens.

The experienced pair Sarah Elliott and Kelly Applebee, who both formed part of Dandenong’s last Grand Final in 2007-08, are big game performers and will be the key scalps for the Mustangs’ bowling attack.

The Lions will again be employing the spin to win philosophy with three leg-spinners, VicSpirit rookie Alana King, Chelsea Moscript and Laura Croft, to combine with Elliott’s off-spinners.

The leg-spinning trio have claimed 79 wickets between them this season and could be a handful should the Butler Oval pitch take spin.

Play will begin at Butler Oval from 11am with updates on the VWCA’s Twitter (@_VWCA).
