Bushrangers Championships reach SFs

An unbeaten century from Bradley Melville has sent North East Knights into a semi-final at the Under-14 Victorian Bushrangers Pathway Championship against Barwon Rockets today.

Melville, who has now amassed an impressive 194 runs for the carnival, led his side to a commanding 47-run win over South East Bayside Breakers.

Batting first, the Knights added 53 for the opening wicket before a Blake Parsons-led revival saw the Breakers claim 4-10 to put the match back on an even keel.

Despite only two other batsmen reaching double figures, Melville went on a late rampage, scoring heavily to bring up his hundred in the final over and guiding his team to 8-163.

Parsons claimed 4-19 from eight overs to be the chief destroyer.

Austin Heldt (46) got the Breakers off to a fantastic start, before a string of wickets through the middle overs consigned them to their fate, slumping from 0-44 to 116 all out.

The Knights’ semi-final opponent clinched a three-wicket victory over Western Spirit to advance to today’s action.

Requiring just 96, the Rockets made tough work of the chase, losing three early wickets to slump to 3-7.

A key 45-run partnership between Dylan Slater (18) and Logan Taylor (35) ensured the Rockets would remain in contention before 15 from Trent Buckwell saw them home with wickets in hand.

In the opposite semi-final, Mallee Murray Bulls will clash with Northern Rivers after they both flexed their muscles.

The Bulls registered a 42-run victory over Northern Falcons after defending 139, while the Rivers defeated South East Sharks by 13 runs courtesy of 5-9 from Jack Bouwmeester.

”The under-14s, as an outside observer, have got a lot of talented players and they are really playing well together,” Rivers region manager Damien Dunlop told the Shepparton News.

”The under-14s have played really well and the under-16s have bowled and fielded really well.”

In the Under-16 Dowling Shield, North West Wizard Jacob Austin blazed 85, but it was not enough to get his side through to today’s semi-finals, going down to Inner East Emus in a thriller.

The Emus scraped over the line with just six balls to spare after a sensational 60-run unbeaten stand between Campbell Lane (23) and Josh Tyquin (30).

At 6-154, The Emus looked in genuine trouble when skipper Shehan Kudage-Don was dismissed for 30, and with the Wizards’ 9-213 still well out of reach.

The Emus need not have worried, however, winning through to play the Rivers after they accounted for Gippsland by just eight runs.

In a low scoring affair, the Rivers defended their modest 143 with distinction; the Pride bowled out for 135 with 12 overs remaining.

Kyle Winter-Irving was no doubt the hero with the ball, taking 3-12 from 10 overs to lead his side to a memorable victory.

In other matches, Jacob Ireland’s unbeaten 59 led his Northern Falcons to a six-wicket win over Western Spirit, while Inner South East Scorpions scraped home against South East Bayside Breakers.

While in the grading matches, North East Knights’ Tearan Gleeson (107) registered his region’s second century of the day during his side’s loss to South East Sharks.
