Country stars triumph in Bundy

Victoria has claimed successive wins at the Australian Country Cricket Championships in Bundaberg after triumphing over Western Australia.

Set a whopping 331 for victory, the Sandgropers made a good fist of the run chase before ultimately falling 64 runs short.

Skipper Garth Nottle (79) and Tim Hutchison (55) put on 88 for the second wicket before the introduction of Shepparton all-rounder Ramadan Yze, the younger brother of former AFL star Adem Yze, saw both men removed with his crafty medium pace.

Earlier in the day, Geelong quick Trent Walerys (1-57) set the tone for the Victorians by dismissing Australian Country XI opener Mitch Green for eight during his opening spell.

While young gun Jacob Evans (41 off 75) provided Western Australia with a glimmer of hope, Swan Hill all-rounder Luke Kentish (3-52) snuffed out any chance with the first of his three victims before Yze (3-59) returned to close out the innings.

Victoria faced six overs in its second innings as Traralgon’s Adrian Burgiel (15*) and Ballarat’s Tristan Dixon (23*) smashed 0-40 to claim much needed bonus points.

Victoria will next meet the combined East Asia Pacific side in a Twenty20 this morning before facing Queensland in another this afternoon.
