Cricket Victoria bring Girls cricket competition to AGSV/APS Co-Educational schools.

As part of the school strategy, Cricket Victoria has been working closely with Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV) and Associated Public Schools (APS) to establish cricket as part of the girls competition.

The AGSV/APS Girls Competition was founded in 1986 and has gradually seen the inclusion of more sports. Girls cricket has been gaining momentum in recent years, with the help of WBBL and the addition of a stand-alone girls competition for the first time is an exciting step forward.

This weekend marked the launch of the competition and saw students from year 7-9 from four of the twelve schools competing including;

  • Penleigh and Essendon Grammar
  • Carey Grammar
  • Ivanhoe Grammar and
  • Mentone Grammar.

The competition is run as a round robin, as a modified cricket program (MILO T20 Blast). The winning school will crowned the inaugural winner of AGSV/APS Girls Cricket.

“A terrific initiative by Cricket Victoria and the AGSV/APS Co-Ed schools that is gaining momentum within our programs. The participating students are enjoying learning the skills and playing the game but most importantly having fun.

The aim is to continue to grow the sport and volume of participating teams, with the vision of one day in the not too distant future becoming an endorsed Girls Core sport.”

–          Luke Soulos (APS) and Troy Rowe (AGSV)

Following the first round, we’re encouraged to hear that the girls are enjoying the competition.

“The introduction of the Girls Cricket Competition to the AGSV/APS Sport offerings has provided an amazing opportunity for all girls.

–          Stuart Bainbridge (Head of Sport, Mentone Grammar)

As the competition evolves, we look forward to seeing the remaining eight schools come on board as we continue to growing cricket for girls across the Victorian School network.
