Cricket Victoria Chairman Retires

Cricket Victoria (CV) Chairman Geoff Tamblyn has retired at tonight's annual general meeting in Jolimont.

Mr Tamblyn had served as Chairman since 2001 and has been at the forefront of significant governance reform in Australian cricket during that time.

Having enjoyed a decorated playing career with St Kilda, including first-class selection for Victoria against the touring England team in 1974-75, Mr Tamblyn became a Cricket Victoria Delegate in 1988-89 and was elected onto the Board in 1993-94.

He resigned as a Delegate in 2000-01 upon his ascension to the Chairmanship.

From 1997 to 2013, Mr Tamblyn also served as a Director at Cricket Australia and was an effective advocate for greater commitment to community cricket and engagement of females in the sport, as well as serving in many other roles for the national body.

Mr Tamblyn was awarded with a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2014 for his services to cricket.

As Deputy Chair, Russell Thomas will be acting Chair until September 7 when the new Chair will be elected.

Looking at the season ahead, the meeting moved that Men’s Premier Cricket will now reschedule to commence its season on the Grand Final eve public holiday in Victoria, Friday October 2. The season was originally scheduled to begin on Sunday October 4.

In other news from the meeting, Michael King was confirmed as a new elected director (filling the vacancy created by Mr Tamblyn’s retirement) along with the unopposed re-elections of Russell Thomas and Tim Considine. Paul Barker, newly confirmed to members as an appointed director, was also in attendance for his first meeting.

Mr Barker has extensive experience, serving on the boards of Mirvac, TAC, WorkSafe and Stadium Operations Limited (Etihad Stadium) amongst other companies while also playing for the Melbourne Cricket Club.

The funding announcement for the Junction Oval project was the highlight of a busy season for CV which included a world record crowd at the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup Final and a 29th Sheffield Shield title for the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers.

Cricket Victoria reported a profit of $1,461,905 for the 2014-15 financial year ($640,494 surplus in 2013-14). This result was boosted from previous years by non-cash items, including unrealised gains in the fair value of investment properties and managed funds totalling $1.4 million.

A more detailed look at the past 12 months was published in CV’s Annual Report, which was also tabled at the meeting, with a digital copy accessible here.
