Cricket Victoria re-brands pathway programs

Cricket Victoria's much vaunted pathway program will be re-branded this summer to recognise the state's flagship sides.

From 2012-13 onwards, the respective boys and girls systems will be known as the Victorian Bushrangers and VicSpirit pathway programs.

The re-branding recognises the link between the feeder system and the need for emerging talent to aspire to play for the state’s traditional teams.

Established in 1999, the Cricket Victoria Pathway consists of a series of programs and competitions for talented cricketers starting at under-13 and moving through to senior cricket.

There are eight metropolitan and eight country regions that are represented in every pathway program meaning players can participate in pathway programs irrespective of where in Victoria they live.

Victorian Ryobi One-Day Cup coach Simon Helmot says the link between pathway and elite is crucial to Victorian cricket.

“It is critical, the players in the pathway are the ones who will be representing the state next and we want as many kids as possible aspiring to play for the Big V and to go on and play for Australia,” Helmot said.

Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit WT20 captain Emma Inglis says that the pathway program is crucial to a young player’s development.

“I think the pathway program is extremely important, it gives a competitive environment to improve skills and gain access to quality coaching,” Inglis said.

“If you look at Kate Dempsey and Alana King, two young players added to the VicSpirit squad, the pathway program has eased them into the State program.
