Essendon Maribyrnong Park and Box Hill go to battle

Essendon Maribyrnong Park and Box Hill will clash for the Agnes McDonnell Trophy in the Essteele Premier Firsts Final at Schramms Reserve in Doncaster tomorrow.

After last year’s grand final loss, Box Hill will look to make amends by securing their second title of the season after being crowned T20 premiers last month.

Led by captain Anna Lanning, who has amassed 603 runs and scalped 24 wickets this season, the Mustangs will head into the final with a mix of youth and experience.

Top-order bats Rebecca Carter (306 runs) and Cassie Brock (455 runs) will play a pivotal role in the Mustangs’ title hopes along with pace bowler Penelope Cleghorn (13 wickets) in the bowling attack.

“Our young players have been outstanding this season and have really matured,” Lanning said.

“The addition of Cassie Brock to both our bowling and batting line-up has been a key.”

Opponents EMP will also be looking for redemption after last year’s semi final exit to Dandenong.

“Since the beginning of the season, we’ve been determined to make it into the finals series,” EMP captain Briana Binch said.

“We have a core group of players who played in the semi final last year, as well as some players new to the team, so we’re certainly looking forward to the opportunity of winning a final.”

Having notched 385 runs and claimed 22 wickets this season, Binch will again play a key role for the Bombers along with top-order batters Natalie Schilov (402 runs) and Stephanie Townsend (292 runs at 48.67).

With a strong bowling line-up that features the Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit’s Emily McIntyre (28 wickets), Kristen Beams (26 wickets), Molly Strano (21 wickets) and Emma Kearney (10 wickets), EMP’s attack has proven to be potent and could be a game winner for the Bombers.

“Our strength is probably our bowling at the moment, so we’ll be looking for early wickets in our bowling innings and also getting runs on the board early if we bat first,” Binch said.

Play will commence at 11am at Schramms Reserve with updates on the VWCA’s Twitter (@_VWCA).
