Imparja Cup campaign starts in style

The InfoReady Victorian Imparja Cup team drew a line in the red dust with two memorable victories on the opening day of the national tournament.

In its first match, Queensland won the toss and elected to bat, posting 4-131 thanks to handy contributions from Cameron Trask (36) Worrin William (31) and Robert Miller (27).

Victoria’s Josh Eaton was the pick of the bowlers, completing his four overs with figures of 2-24.

“I thought I bowled pretty well and everyone around me helped me lift,” Eaton said.

However, it was a true skipper’s knock from Ben Abbatangelo, who finished unbeaten on 60, that cemented Victoria’s first ever win over the sunshine state.

“Personal performances are always great but in the end it’s team performances we are after and making sure everyone plays their role,” Abbatangelo said.

Heading into its second game full of confidence, Noogal Toengorrt Tani won the toss and elected to bat against Tasmania.

With wickets quickly falling, Victoria posted 8-94 from its 20 overs.

Tasmania started well, racing to 0-52 after 10 overs, but Victoria’s bowling attack continued to apply pressure with spinner Fletcher Stewart getting the breakthrough wicket of Nick Cashion and finishing with 2-17 from four overs.

Wickets then fell regularly, with Victoria claiming 9-30 to register a 12-run victory.

Abbatangelo was again instrumental, claiming 3-8 from three overs, while Josh Eaton took 1-15 from three overs.

“It was just a sensational effort by the team with back to back wins on the first day,” Abbatangelo said.

“It leaves us in good stead for the rest of the week.”
