Knights are crowned champions

The North East Knights held off the Western Spirit during a nail-biter to register a two-run victory in the Under-18 Female State Championship Final yesterday at the MCG.

Having won the toss and electing to bat, the North East Knights posted a score 8-97 in the Twenty20 contest.

Western Spirit was gallant in their run chase, with contributions from Kaitlin Beardmore (21), Renee McBain (21) and Emily Smith (19).

However, the Knights’ bowling attack saw the Spirit fall short by just two runs, crowning them as State Champions.

“It’s been about five years in the making for those girls. It’s just an awesome feeling,” Knights coach Noel Bailey said.

“This is a big boost for our region.”

The Knights’ Georgie North was a standout performer on the day, winning the player of the final, as she contributed to her team’s victory with both bat (25) and ball (2-9).

Contributions also came from Chelsea Nicholas (16 & 1-15) and Kayla Sheppard (11 and 1-23).

“North was probably the best player for us, but overall the team lifted that 10 per cent more,” Bailey said.

However, it was the opportunity of playing on Australia’s number one sporting stadium that made the victory that extra bit special.

“The girls were thrilled to get the opportunity to play on the MCG… I told them that it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity so make the most of it – and they did,” Bailey said.

“Thanks to everyone who made it possible, especially to Cricket Victoria and the MCG staff, for letting us play on it – we will never forget it.”

Emily Smith (Western Spirit) and Chelsea Moscript (Gippsland Pride) tied on eight votes for the player of the series.
