Mayoum poised to tackle Championships

Mayoum Mayoum is set to become the first South Sudanese cricketer to play in the Victorian Bushrangers Pathway Championships.

Selected as a member of the under-14 Western Spirit team, the pace bowler looks to be an exciting prospect with unforeseen athleticism.

“We see him as an x-factor in the team,” Western Spirit coach Nick Hatzoglou said.

“He is very athletic and is a very capable opening bowler.”

In 2005, Mayoum and his family migrated to Australia, where they settled in the suburb of Derrimut.

Knowing nothing about cricket, Mayoum and his siblings were recruited to the game by Sunshine Heights coach and Mother of God Primary School teacher Matthew Shawcross.

Since bowling his first ball in 2009, Mayoum has played five seasons at Sunshine Heights in both the under-13 and under-15 divisions.

Throughout the years, the 13-year-old has excelled in his cricket skills, making 576 runs and taking 33 wickets in 73 games.

With Mayoum being the first South Sudanese cricketer to be selected in the pathway system, cricket could now see a new population involved in the sport.

“Australian cricket needs to tap into its multicultural market,” Shawcross said.

“As a result we will see families getting involved and players becoming role models for their community.”
