Multi Sport Teacher Professional Development Program a great success

Last week saw 40 teachers across Victoria come together at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville to participate in a teacher specific professional development program.

The multi sport program is in its third year, and is jointly hosted by Cricket Victoria, Netball Victoria and AFL Victoria.

Teachers were provided both theoretical and practical information across the three sporting codes, highlighting the similarities between game sense activities and the effective teaching of interchangeable skills.

The key topics explored included:

  • Cooperative games
  • Striking and fielding games
  • Invasion games
  • Planning and practical appraisal

The program also addressed the key stages of development of primary school-aged children and their implications for teachers, development of sport specific skills, developing effective communication strategies in the sporting environment and facilitating games and activities that engage students of different ages and abilities.

For the first time, teachers also took part in a coaching course in cricket and were awarded their Community Cricket Accreditation, a launching pad for coaching in cricket.

Cricket Victoria School Participation Officer Sophie Crockett said: “The Multi Sport Teacher Professional Development Program is a great way for cricket to give back to teachers who are engaged in our sport and provide them with continued professional development.”

The next Multi Sport program will be held in Bendigo on 19 October 2018. If you would like information on this program, please email scrockett@cricketvictoria.com.au
