New Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association launched

The Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association (MAACA) launched their inaugural season on Sunday October 25 at Moorleigh Reserve in East Bentleigh.

The new association is the 77th recognised by Cricket Victoria, and is the first in Australia dedicated to cricketers with disabilities.

The opening match between Moorabbin CC and Croydon Ranges CC on Sunday could not have come into fruition without the joint initiative of Cricket Victoria and EventDynamix who provided professional support to form the association, as well as the Victorian Government through the Access for All Abilities program.

MAACA President Stephen Lefebvre praised the commitment of all involved in the creation of the new association, which is already growing with new teams applying for next season.

“A considerable amount of effort has been put in over the last seven to eight years now and it’s the only association with all abilities cricketers so we’re incredibly proud,” Said Mr Lefebvre.

“There are already more teams looking to get involved in the next few years going forward too, so it’s an exciting time.”

The perseverance shown by everyone to make this new association possible highlights the efforts of all cricketing bodies to make cricket a game for all Australians.

The support of the Victorian Government through the Access for All Abilities program was a crucial partnership and along with Cricket Victoria, make up the major stakeholders in funding the establishment of the association.

Cricket Victoria’s General Manager for Game & Market Development Rohan O’Neill, who attended the match on Sunday, also spoke of the hard work by all to bring MAACA into fruition as well as the great spirit shown by those present.

“MAACA is our newest cricket association and I must congratulate the inaugural committee led by President Steve Lefebvre on all their hard work in establishing Australia’s first association for cricketers of All Abilities,” said Mr O’Neill.

“It was great to see the excitement amongst the players, officials and supporters who attended the game at Moorabbin Cricket Club on Sunday.”

As it stands, the competition’s first season features six clubs, however looking into the future, other clubs across Victoria have already committed to joining in the second year to expand the association further.

“We anticipate that the competition will grow beyond its initial six clubs and judging from Sunday’s matches the future is very bright for our newest cricket association,” said Mr O’Neill.

“Victoria has led the way in All Abilities cricket and the support of a number of dedicated volunteers as well as the Victorian government and Cricket Australia has been critical.”

Last Sunday’s Super League fixture also featured fellow founding member clubs Yarraville and Axe Creek at Hansen Reserve in Footscray, with Skye making up the fifth spot beginning with a bye.

Ferntree Gully has entered a team into the Ten Over Tonk division to round out the initial six clubs playing.

The next round takes place on Sunday November 15, with Moorabbin playing Yarraville and Skye opening up their campaign against Axe Creek.
