Wendouree champions again

Wendouree can again lay claim to being the best club side in Victoria after defeating Bentleigh Uniting in the Final of the Kookaburra Statewide Twenty20 Cup at the MCG yesterday.

Despite only posting 9-111 from their 20 overs, the Red Caps’ bowlers delivered a great performance, limiting Bentleigh Uniting to just 8-82 in front of a crowd of around 500.

Gavin Webb 22 (21) and Heath Pyke 20 (27) top scored for Wendouree after they had won the toss and elected to bat.

Wicketkeeper Pyke also impressed with the gloves, executing three stumpings.

Wendouree captain David Ellis told the Ballarat Courier he was proud of his side reclaiming the title they had previously won in 2010.

“It’s an awesome feeling to come back here and do it again,” Ellis said.

“There are four guys in the team who haven’t won it before, so to see the looks on their faces when we won was something special.

“We’re overjoyed to have a win but to do it on this stage and from the situation we were in is just amazing.”

Ellis thanked the vocal support from the Wendouree supporters who travelled down to the match.

“We felt if we won the toss and batted then that was automatically another 20 runs on the board,” said Ellis.

“To have the crowd here and to do it on this stage is really something special.”
