Beams leads fundraising effort for U12 girls

The Victorian women’s team have put true teamwork into practice, raising almost $5,000 to support travel costs for the School Sport Victoria (SSV) 12 and Under girls cricket team to get to the national championships Bunbury, WA next week.

The move was spearheaded by Melbourne Stars spinner Kristen Beams who attended a recent U12 training session and was told of the costs to families in sending young players to interstate competitions. In some instances, the individual costs can be more than $3,000.

School Sport Victoria (SSV) provides book of raffle tickets for junior players to sell to help cover some of their costs.

Led by Beams, the Victorian players sold two of every junior players’ raffle books on their behalf to send the fundraising drive for the Under 12s to a new level. Australian captain Meg Lanning purchased an entire book of tickets for one lucky player.

“The girls did a terrific job and it was great to rally behind the young team,” Beams said.

Cricket Manager – Outer East Metro Di Day said it was a fantastic approach to supporting community cricket.

“I know the families are extremely grateful for the support and it has been fantastic to see our Victorian players get behind this cause and get the team to Bunbury,” Day said.

“There are always going to be some costs associated with travel and equipment, but it was really impressive to see the playing group take the initiative and offer to help out.”
