Cricket Victoria celebrates National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated between 27th May to 3rd June each year and is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

This year’s theme is Be Brave. Make Change is a challenge to all Australians, to be brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can make change for the benefit of all Australians. www.reconciliation.org.au

On 27th May 1967 Australia’s most successful referendum saw more than 90% of Australians vote to give the Australian Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and to recognise them in the Census.

On 3rd June 1992 the historic High Court Mabo decision lead to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands. Hence, the significance of the dates.

The week-long celebration is for all Australians to explore ways to join the national reconciliation effort.

The T20 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cup ran in April, the first time the Melbourne Stars and Renegades attended the competition against the Sydney Sixers and Thunder. The Cup was a wonderful opportunity to share culture and cricket and inspire new players.
