Cricket Victoria on course for continued success

Cricket Victoria celebrated significant achievements over the past year and confirmed its path towards further growth and success following the company's Annual General Meeting held last night.

The 2016-17 financial year delivered a range of key successes including:

  • Expected and timely progress with construction of the new Victorian Cricket and Community Centre at Junction Oval
  • A record third consecutive Sheffield Shield title for the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers (and fifth in nine seasons)
  • New cricket audiences and commercial strength delivered by the Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars
  • A stunning 14.7% increase in overall cricket participation across the state to 376,300 total participants

Cricket Victoria Chairman Russell Thomas said the organisation was right to celebrate achievements to date, but was also committed to a whole-of-cricket approach to future growth.

“It has been a great year and we are proud of our achievements in that time. That said, we have a significant volume of work ahead of us to continue on this path to positive change and ensure that Victorian cricket is a sport for all.

“This is a multi-faceted sport with its own set of unique challenges. Our overriding principle has always been our love of cricket – we want the best for every participant, player and administrator and we want a strong cricket community across Victoria,” Mr Thomas said.

The meeting also confirmed one change to the Cricket Victoria Board. Mr Peter Williams was elected as a Director, replacing Michael King, while Claudia Fatone and Paul Jackson were re-elected by Members for further three-year terms.

Mr Williams has a background in financial services in the corporate sector and is currently a director of several organisations including the Australian Baseball Federation.

“I thank Michael King for his service and commitment to Victorian cricket and I welcome Peter’s expertise to the Board,” Mr Thomas said.

Cricket Victoria CEO Tony Dodemaide said the company was focused on a productive season ahead.

“The Victorian Cricket and Community Centre is well on the way to completion which will deliver great opportunities for both cricket and the wider Victorian community for decades ahead,” Mr Dodemaide said.

“Together with the new Board, Members and their affiliated clubs and associations, we are determined to deliver on our vision for continued growth and success including increased female participation, successful representative state and Big Bash teams, among many other projects underway for the ultimate benefit of Victorian cricket as a whole,” Dodemaide said.
