Vale Eddie Illingworth
Cricket Victoria is saddened by the passing of former Victorian pace bowler Eddie Illingworth, who represented the state in the early 1960s.
Illingworth played five matches for Victoria between the 1961/62 and 1964/65 Sheffield Shield seasons, contributing with both bat and ball. Across his appearances for the state, he scored 155 runs at an average of 17.22, with a highest score of 47, and claimed 15 wickets at 27.60, including best figures of 4/28.
While his time at state level was brief, Illingworth’s impact on Victorian Premier Cricket was significant, particularly with Fitzroy Cricket Club where he established himself as one of the competition’s most prolific bowlers.
Across 233 First XI matches between 1957/58 and 1977/78, Illingworth scored 2,666 runs at 14.03, including seven half-centuries with a top score of 61 not out.
With the ball, the right-arm paceman was a constant threat, claiming 599 wickets at an outstanding average of 18.60. His career included 26 five-wicket innings hauls and three 10-wicket match hauls, with best innings figures of 8/18.
Illingworth’s haul of 599 wickets places him eighth on the all-time Men’s First XI career wickets list in Victorian Premier Cricket, highlighting his longevity and impact across two decades of competition.
Beyond his playing career, Illingworth continued to contribute to the game as a Fitzroy Cricket Club delegate from 1970/71 to 1977/78, reflecting his ongoing commitment to both his club and Victorian cricket.
