Cricket Victoria is deeply saddened by the passing of Life Member Jill Crowther, a long-serving and passionate contributor to women’s cricket in Victoria.
Ms Crowther died on July 8 following complications arising from illness.
Ms Crowther’s lifelong dedication to the game was no coincidence – she was born into cricket administration. Her mother, the late June Cole, was a prominent figure in the post-war development of the game, serving the Victorian Women’s Cricket Association (VWCA) as a player, coach and administrator (serving stints as President and Vice President) and the Australian Women’s Cricket Council (AWCC) as Secretary for 12 years.
The legacy of June Cole lives on today, honoured annually in the Premier Cricket Awards with the June Cole Award for the Best First Year Player in the Victorian Women’s Premier Cricket 1st XI.
For decades, Ms Crowther played an integral role with the Melbourne Ladies Cricket Club, both on and off the field. She also served as Match Results and Registration Secretary for the VWCA and later the Women’s Community Cricket Competition (WCCC) in a span from 1965 until 2019.
Her dedication, reliability and meticulous record-keeping over many decades made her a cornerstone of the competition’s operations.
In recognition of Ms Crowther’s outstanding service, the WCCC named its Best Administered Club Award in her honour – a fitting tribute to a woman who championed the game from behind the scenes for so many years.
Ms Crowther was inducted as a Life Member of the VWCA in 1976 and was elevated to CV Life Membership in August 2014 as part of the integration of the VWCA into CV’s operations.
Ms Crowther’s contributions were also recognised at a national level when she was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for her services to women’s cricket.
Cricket Victoria extends its deepest condolences to the Crowther family, including her husband Ed and the broader Victorian cricket community who knew and admired her.
Her legacy of service, integrity and passion will long be remembered.
Vale.
