Cricket Victoria is saddened by the passing of former Australian, Victorian and Brunswick Park Ladies player, Julie Calvert (pictured three in from backleft).

Ms Calvert passed away on 30 August following complications arising from illness.

At club level, she made her VWCA Pennant debut with Victoria Park in the 1980/81 season, before the club merged with Brunswick North Yarra to form Brunswick Park Ladies (now Prahran Cricket Club) the following year.

Prahran Cricket Club continues to honour Calvert, with the Women’s Club Champion awarded the Julie Calvert Medal each season. A life member of Prahran Cricket Club, she remains the club record holder for both most matches played, and most runs scored.

Across available records for the top grade of women’s cricket in Victoria, Ms Calvert played 263 First XI matches, scoring 7,098 runs at an average of 36.21. A genuine allrounder, she recorded 12 centuries, with a top score of 147* against Box Hill in 1994/95, along with 30 half-centuries.

With the ball, she claimed 48 wickets at an average of 14.02, including two five-wicket hauls, with best figures of 5/36 against Melbourne-Tooronga in 1997/98. Dynamic in the field, she also recorded 149 catches and 31 stumpings across her First XI career.

Victoria cap #152, Ms Calvert debuted for her state in the 1986-87 season and went on to score 1,537 runs at an average of 26.05, including five half-centuries and a top score of 66. She also contributed 37 catches and 13 stumpings.

On the international stage, Ms Calvert received One Day Cap #70 for Australia, representing her country in six ODIs as a wicketkeeper-batter in 1993 and 1994. In her time in the green and gold, she scored 96 runs at an average of 24.00, top scoring with 34 on debut against the West Indies at Tunbridge Wells during the 1993 Women’s World Cup.

In recognition of her outstanding career, Ms Calvert was inducted into the CV 200 Club in the 2022-23 season following research into the top grade of women’s cricket during the VWCA era.

Cricket Victoria extends its condolences to the Calvert family, Prahran Cricket Club, and the wider Victorian cricket community.

Julie Calvert’s passion, skill, and contribution to the game at every level will be long remembered.

Vale.
