Cricket Victoria is saddened to learn of the passing of former Victorian and Australian cricketer Shirley Banfield, aged 88.
Banfield was Victorian Women’s Cap No. 85 and Australian Women’s Test Cap No. 69, representing Victoria from the 1956/57 Australian Women’s Cricket Carnival through to 1972/73.
Across 38 matches for Victoria (in available records), the left-handed batter scored 968 runs at an average of 26.16, including one century and seven half-centuries.
She represented Australia in the 1971/72 Women’s Test against New Zealand at Junction Oval, opening the batting and scoring 20 and 21. Banfield had also toured England with the Australian squad in 1963, serving as scorer in the First Test and 12th player for the Second and Third Tests.
At club level, Banfield enjoyed a long career with Clifton Hill in the former Victorian Women’s Cricket Association. She played 197 First XI matches, scoring 7,630 runs at 34.84, including five centuries, while also taking 156 wickets at 23.74 with best figures of 6/7.
Banfield was awarded VWCA Life Membership in 1988, and as a member of Cricket Victoria’s 200 Club, she remained closely connected to Victorian cricket throughout her life.
Cricket Victoria extends its condolences to Shirley’s family, friends, former teammates and the wider cricket community.
Vale Shirley Banfield.
