Victoria are 1-28 at stumps on Day 1 of their JLT Sheffield Shield clash against South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide.

James Pattinson (3-52), Chris Tremain (3-38) and Peter Siddle (2-15) led the way with the ball for the Vics, who dismissed the Redbacks for 260.

Play will continue tomorrow with Travis Dean (12*) and Will Pucovski (0*) at the crease, still trailing South Australia by 232 runs.

Nic Maddinson has returned home to Melbourne after fracturing his right thumb while fielding in slips before the tea break.

He will take no further part in the match.

Maddinson will see a specialist on Thursday for further assessment.
