Victoria topple New South Wales to claim first Shield win

Victoria has kept it’s hopes of making a late season charge alive in the Marsh Sheffield Shield by beating New South Wales by 112 runs at the SCG.

The win was highlighted by superb individual performances by Nic Maddinson, Seb Gotch and Peter Siddle.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first Maddinson set the tone with a stylish 95, before Gotch reinforced Victoria’s total with a magnificent unbeaten century. The first of his first class career.

In response, three wickets to debutant leg spinner Will Parker helped bundle out the hosts for 310, with Siddle, Chris Tremain and Will Sutherland also taking multiple wickets.

Looking to force the game along late on day three, Maddinson produced a blistering 105* alongside Marcus Harris (54*) to allow captain Peter Handscomb to declare at 1-168 with a lead of 289 runs.

After the New South Wales openers got off to a solid start, wickets tumbled on the final day with Siddle producing a standout performance to finish with 5-49. Scott Boland also grabbed two wickets to help Victoria to it’s first win of the 2019-20 Marsh Sheffield Shield competition.

Victoria’s next assignment will be to face Queensland at the Gabba starting next Monday.
