Molineux appointed Australian captain as Victorians feature prominently in India series squads
Victorian all-rounder Sophie Molineux has been named captain of the Australian Women’s Team, marking a major milestone in her career and reinforcing Victoria’s strong representation at national level ahead of the upcoming multi-format series against India.
The 28-year-old will make her national captaincy debut in the T20I series, before serving as vice-captain to retiring Alyssa Healy in the ODI and Test matches. She will then take the reigns for all formats following Healy’s retirement. Molineux’s appointment follows an outstanding period of leadership, having captained Victoria for the past four seasons and led the Melbourne Renegades to their maiden Weber WBBL title in 2024.
Molineux said being entrusted with the role was a moment she was incredibly proud of.
“It’s a real honour to be named Australian captain and something I’m incredibly proud of, especially following on from Alyssa, who’s had such a huge impact on this team and the game,” Molineux said.
“We’ve got a really strong group with plenty of natural leaders, alongside a lot of exciting talent coming through, and I’m really looking forward to working together as we keep evolving and pushing ourselves to the next level, while staying true to the identity that makes this team so special.”

Molineux’s appointment headlines a strong Victorian contingent selected across the Australian and Governor-General’s XI squads for the India series.
Victorian players selected include:

- Annabel Sutherland: Australia (T20I, ODI & Test squads)
- Georgia Wareham: Australia (T20I, ODI & Test squads)
- Kim Garth: Australia (T20I, ODI & Test squads)
- Nicole Faltum: Governor-General’s XI
- Tess Flintoff: Governor-General’s XI
Australia will face India in a T20I, ODI and Test series commencing in February, with all matches broadcast live across Seven, Fox Cricket, Kayo Sports and ABC Radio platforms.
