Premier Cricket poised to return

The opening round of Victorian Premier Cricket will commence tomorrow with a host of Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers lining up for their club sides.

Jayde Herrick will be looking to impress state selectors as he leads the Frankston Peninsula attack against Northcote at Bill Lawry Oval.

Having returned to the Heat after a stint with Casey-South Melbourne, the hostile quick may well be one of the recruits of the summer.

Bushrangers rookie Matt Short will be hoping to blunt Herrick’s influence at the top of the order for Northcote.

State teammates Ian Holland and James Muirhead will appear for Ringwood and St Kilda respectively, having returned from this week’s Toyota Futures League encounter against Queensland.

Muirhead will turn out for the St Kilda against Camberwell, who will be captained this season by former Tasmanian all-rounder Brendan Drew.

Reigning premiers Melbourne will be looking to emulate last season’s sparkling form against Casey-South Melbourne, but will have to do it without star batsman Michael Hill, who is away on Bushrangers duty.

Reigning Ryder medalist Brenton McDonald is also missing after crossing to South Australia, making his RYOBI One-Day cup debut for the Redbacks today.

Carlton will boast a plethora of young talent as they take on Essendon at Princess Park.

The Blues will debut Lachlan McKenna and Darren Colaco, who recently participated in the under-19 Victorian Country v Metro series, under the guidance of former Bushranger Tim Welsford.

For the Bombers, Bushrangers paceman Louis Cameron will spearhead the attack, with Futures League representative Solomon Mire also playing.

The newly formed Greenvale Kangaroos will make their first appearance in the Premier Cricket competition against Prahran at Toorak Park, with  Daniel Salpietro poised to clash with his former side in round one.

Former Bushrangers rookie Steve Reid will head the pace attack for Melbourne University after crossing from Essendon as they host Fitzroy Doncaster.

Peter Dickson will captain the Lions after Lloyd Mash stepped down earlier in the year.

Retired Test bowler Darren Pattinson will skipper Dandenong as they take on Geelong at Shepley Oval, while in the Monash derby, Hawthorn-Monash will take on the Monash Tigers.

Meanwhile, a full complement of Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit representatives will be available in the Essteele Premier Firsts.

Dandenong, the reigning premiers, has been bolstered on the eve of the season with the return of Test star Sarah Elliott, who has relocated from the Top End.

The Lions will sweat on the availability of Southern Stars quick Julie Hunter, who is nursing a shoulder injury, as they come up against a powerful Brunswick Park outfit that includes Elyse Villani, Emma Inglis and Jess Cameron at the top of the order.

Box Hill will be strengthened by the presence of skipper Meg Lanning, while VicSpirit young gun Cassie Brock has crossed to the Mustangs.

In their second year in the competition, Melbourne will be hoping to cause a round one boil over against the competition heavyweight and have English recruit Evelyn Jones to call upon.

Former Australian captain Karen Rolten will take charge of Essendon Maribynong Park in a non-playing capacity and one of her first duties will be to combat Plenty Valley’s overseas import, Mariko Hill.

The reigning Hong Kong cricketer of the year is a lively quick, who will train with the VicSpirit throughout the summer.
