Shipperd takes charge of Academy

Commonwealth Bank Bushranger coach Greg Shipperd passed on his cricketing expertise when Lower Plenty Cricket Club's Winter Squad Academy gathered for a cricket seminar at the MCG.

Eighteen young, budding cricketers listened to Shipperd as he gave advice on playing cricket at the elite level.

“Our squad members, coaches and parents were very excited by Greg’s talk,” John O’Connor said

“Three key points resonated with the boys; have a plan, prepare hard and it’s up to me to get the win.”

The Academy is composed of two groups, a 15-21 year-old group with the potential to play first and second grade cricket along with the new addition of a 14-18 year-old group that is open to all.

In its third year, the Academy aims to develop cricketers both on and off the field.

Lower Plenty’s Winter Squad Academy kicked off the first of its six sessions last week and will run through to early August.

Sessions will be split into both practical skills and mental training to give the cricketers an understanding of all aspects of the game.

Along with the Academy, Lower Plenty has also placed a focus on educating its coaches to assist in better developing its players.

“Lower Plenty are the leaders in coach education within the region,” Cricket Victoria Regional Cricket Manager David Hall said.

“They are hosting a Cricket Victoria delivered community coaching course in September as well as a region coaching seminar in November.

“It’s great to see a lot of effort being put into both player and coach development within the Northern region.”
