Tarneit claim premiership in first yea

One of Victoria's youngest cricket clubs has claimed an unlikely first XI premiership on the weekend at Featherbrook Oval in Point Cook

The Tarneit Cricket Club, which was established this season in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association, defeated Melton Centrals in the B Grade Grand Final.

Centrals were kept to 242 on the opening day of the match thanks to a five-wicket haul from Raghunandan Pallath (5-51) and after not having passed 26 for the season, opening batsman Deepak Sharma (121) produced when it mattered most with a century to guide Tarneit to first-innings points and the title.

80% of the Titans’ players come from an Indian background and the club was set up after friends wanted to get involved in serious competition after organising matches between themselves in the past.

Club president Sandeep Singh, who was instrumental in the founding of the club, was ecstatic at the side’s victory.

“We’re over the moon,” Singh said.

“Our firsts were premiers and our seconds were runners-up. You can’t ask for more in our first year.”

Located in one of the fastest growing areas of Melbourne, Tarneit are looking to build on this year’s success with the club recently holding their first-ever Milo In2Cricket session with 25 participants experiencing cricket for the first time.
