White to captain the Stars

Earlier today, the Stars confirmed White would once again take the reins of the MCG-based outfit following the retirement of Shane Warne.

White’s appointment was made amongst the announcement of a further six players in the contracting window with Matthew Wade, Peter Handscomb, Clive Rose, Daniel Worral, Alexander Keath and Marcus Stoinis committing to the Stars.

Wade, Handscomb and Keath were all members of the Stars’ foundation team, while Rose and Worrall will complete the second of their two-year deals respectively.

Stonis, 23, joins the Stars after playing three matches for Perth Scorchers last season including the final against Brisbane Heat.

Following today’s commitment, the Stars have signed 17 of their 18 players for BBL|03 with White among those on multi-year deals.

Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Rob Quiney, Glenn Maxwell, Luke Wright, Clint McKay, John Hastings, Jackson Bird, James Faulkner and Lasith Malinga rounding out the returning squad for this summer.

Stars coach Greg Shipperd said he was delighted with his list and believes it offers the right mix between experience, young talent, T20 skills and strong Victorian representation.

“The Stars have unfinished business and I’m confident we’ve put together a team that can redeem us as finalists this year,” Shipperd said.

“We’re very pleased with our latest signings – we feel most spaces are now covered and the squad caters for the potential loss of players due to the concurrent Test and ODI series.

“Our core batting group provides flexibility and experience. Handscomb, Keath and Stoinis in their own right are energetic and multi鈥恠killed batsmen who provide further depth.

“The bowling stable oozes classic T20 skills. We feel this group aligns beautifully with Twenty20 demands – accuracy, yorkers and variations. Our emerging spin group in Rose and Maxwell will be well supported by part-timers White, Hussey and Hodge.”

With Warne electing to not play on, the inaugural Stars captain will return as skipper for BBL|03.

Shipperd was enthusiastic about White returning as captain, describing him as ‘one of the world’s best strategic T20 thinkers’.

The former Australian T20 captain was pleased to once again be at the helm of the Stars.

“I’m rapt and looking forward to be leading the Melbourne Stars once again,” White said.

“I’m extremely confident with the list that has been assembled and will be working hard to ensure everything possible is done to give us every chance of success this summer.”
