Women as Leaders: Claudia Fatone

Introduced to the game by her mother, Fatone quickly took a liking to cricket, joining Bundoora United Cricket Club at age 14.

After joining the club’s committee, Fatone delved further into the game by volunteering at the Victorian Women’s Cricket Association.

In 1997, she was appointed as the sole employee of the VWCA, where her continuous dedication saw women’s cricket grow in Victoria, gaining funding and expanding its staff.

Four years later, Fatone became the VWCA Executive Officer, where she was instrumental in delivering the first phases of integration with Cricket Victoria.

Moving into the sport employment industry, Fatone joined the VWCA Board where she would take on the role of President.

In 2011, she resigned from the VWCA Board to become the first female elected on the Cricket Victoria Board.

Two years later, Fatone was acknowledged for the endless hours that she has given to cricket, receiving Life Membership at the VWCA.

While being involved in a minority sector of a large sport, Fatone noted that while there were varying challenges, volunteering had taught her a lot about the game.

“When you volunteer at a club you begin to understand how a club operates and you develop fantastic skills along the way,” Fatone said.

Along with her administrative roles, Fatone also continued her on-field duties at Plenty Valley Cricket Club.

With a full-time job, volunteering and playing duties, it’s Fatone’s passion and love for the game that has seen her become a valued member of the cricket community.

“Cricket is a great game for a variety of reasons,” Fatone said.

“Being involved in a club environment allows you to socialise with your friends while keeping active.

“I definitely encourage all females to get involved in cricket.”

Claudia Fatone is the first story in Cricket Victoria’s Women as Leaders series. Each month we will highlight the achievements of the leading women in Victorian cricket. Click here for more information on Women as leaders in cricket.
