Women as Leaders: Jan Howard

Ringwood Cricket Club's Jan Howard has become one of the premier scorers in Australian cricket.

Having started at age 12, Howard became involved in the pastime through her family’s connection with Presbyterian Boys Association.

After PBA, she moved to Ringwood where she has spent more than 40 years scoring at the club.

In her time, Howard has had the privilege of being involved in international matches, scoring five to six elite games a year, including both One-Day and T20 fixtures.

At the end of 2004, she was selected to online score at Australia’s Test match against Pakistan.

Howard has also scored state fixtures since the 1991-92 season as well as national pathway tournaments.

Aside from her elite duties, Howard admits that her heart lies in the east, noting that scoring the back-to-back Ringwood premierships in 2007-08 and 2008-09 has been the highlight of her four-decade career.

In addition to scoring, Howard has held various committee roles at Ringwood as well as at the Victorian Cricket Association Umpires and Scorers’ Association.

With a lasting passion for the game, Howard, joined by her husband, Lindsay, continues to put pen to paper, dedicating her Saturdays to Ringwood with the hope of inspiring the next generation of female scorers.

“I would encourage anyone to get involved in the scoring component of cricket,” Howard said.

“It gives you a level of involvement and let’s you come away from the game with something more.”

Jan Howard is the fourth story in Cricket Victoria’s Women as Leaders series. Each month we will highlight the achievements of the leading women in Victorian cricket. Click here for more information on Women as Leaders in cricket.
