The countdown to the Melbourne derby is on

The second installment of the KFC T20 Big Bash League will launch at Etihad Stadium on December 7 with the cross-town rivals poised to go head-to-head.

After smashing TV and attendance records in its opening season, BBL|02 includes 35 blockbuster games across 51 days of non-stop action over the summer holiday period including eight in Melbourne alone.

Muttiah Muralidaran and Shane Warne will resume their rivalry when they line-up for the Renegades and Stars respectively in the first of two derbies for the season.

“Fans voted with their feet and remote controls last season and league will be back bigger and better in season two,” the Big Bash League’s Mike McKenna said.

“BBL was the hottest content on subscription TV in its first season and out-rated all comers across the season. We had an average of almost 300,000 viewers and BBL held the top 31 programs on STV in December and January. BBL also currently holds two of the top 10 STV programs in history.

“More than half a million fans packed venues around the country in BBL|01 and we’re expecting even more fans to pick their teams and show their support this summer.

“Four additional matches have been scheduled this season including an extra derby in Melbourne and Sydney to give fans more of what they want – excitement, fun action and great value.”

With teams playing one extra home and away match this season, Victorian fans will get an extra chance to see the two local sides locked in battle with a second Melbourne derby to be played at the MCG on January 6.

Etihad Stadium will be buzzing for the Renegades four home matches against Melbourne Stars on December 7, last season’s semi-finalists Hobart Hurricanes on December 19, the Daniel Vettori-led Brisbane Heat on December 22 and the Adelaide Strikers on January 2.

The Stars will clash with the Hurricanes on December 15, reigning champions Sydney Sixers on December 21, the Renegades on January 6 and the Sydney Thunder on January 8.
