Proud Cricket Day showcases Victorian cricket’s commitment to LGBT+ community

The annual event celebrates LGBT+ inclusion and diversity in cricket in conjunction with Proud 2 Play at the CitiPower Centre in St Kilda.

Cricket Victoria is currently the top-ranked state sport organisation in the Pride in Sport national benchmark on Australian LGBT+ sports inclusion.

Proud Cricket Day is part of a broader program within Cricket Victoria designed to improve the participation pathway for LGBT+ people, with a broader objective to increase the involvement of the Victorian LGBT+ community in cricket.

Cricket Victoria Head of Diversity and Community Emma Staples said cricket was determined to grow its inclusive approach.

“Engagement with our LGBT+ community is absolutely fundamental to our vision of being the most community-orientated and inclusive sport in Victoria,” Staples said.

“We are extremely proud of the work we have done in this area and have been recognised for that work both here and overseas. We continue to work with clubs and associations across our state to help them foster more inclusive practices and to welcome the fantastic opportunities to work with the LGBT+ community.”

Proud Cricket works to improve equity, diversity and inclusiveness by supporting clubs with education to create more inclusive club practices and improve club culture. In addition, the program provides participants with the skills, tools and resources to further increase inclusion of the LGBT+ community in their club or association.

Cricket Victoria works in partnership with Proud 2 Play – a not-for-profit organisation looking to increase LGBT+ participation in sport through creating sporting environments in which all people can feel comfortable in. The organisation runs participation, education and volunteer programs designed to immerse the LGBT+ community in community sport and activity.
